White Belt Chess Course

This course is intended for beginning players that already know the rules of chess. (If you're not 100% sure about everything, that's ok! Just make you sure you know how all the pieces move.) By the end of this course, you will love the game even more than you did when you started. Each session will include a lesson, plus ample time to play. The course will end with a small non-elimination tournament for all students.

Throughout the course, we will study each of the five main ideas in chess:

• Checkmate - Rook Rollers, Back Rank Mates, and a few others
• Defense - Moving your pieces to save/protected squares
• Endgame - Getting Passed Pawns to Promote!
• Strategy - Castling for safety and development
• Tactics - Forks, Double Attacks, and Sacrifices

Subsequent chess classes will all revisit these same five areas, but with more advanced concepts. In addition to the lessons, students will be provided with a workbook to practice their new skills between classes.
